Return Of Álex Pina And His Heroines Verónica To Netflix

Hosting clubs, car chases, stilettos and extremism on every shot. Sky Rojo, the risky bet of Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato (La casa de papel) that has revolutionized the networks this weekend, is provocative and excessive in equal parts. “Charlie’s angels, but more punk”, was described a few months ago by Asier Etxeandia, who plays Romeo, Tenerife’s most fearsome pimp. And it fell short.

The unclassifiable fiction, a black comedy about prostitution, with high doses of action and not without controversy, has remained in the number 1 position of the most watched Netflix in Spain and many Latin American countries since it was released on Friday. In it, we accompany three prostitutes, Coral (Verónica Sánchez), Wendy (Lali Espósito) and Gina (Yany Prado), who flee in search of their freedom.

Those who have already seen the eight half-hour episodes that make up its first season, will have verified that the series leaves many plots open for a second installment, already confirmed. This is all we know about the continuation of the new Netflix phenomenon.

Filming finished
As is increasingly common on Netflix, Sky Rojo has shot its first and second seasons at the same time. After a chaotic year, with interruptions in production due to the pandemic (and Filomena), the filming of the two installments came to an end in mid-February, a month before the premiere of the fiction.

Own Lali Esposito, whom we interviewed on the 15th of that month, we confirmed he was “elated” because it was the last day on set. “I am zero nostalgic with gigs,” she told us: “I’m the one with a bottle of champagne on the last day. I really like the closings and I enjoy them. I really like the new stages, what is coming now.”

Despite this, he assured that he would miss his colleagues a lot, with whom he has shared his year in Spain: “All these people became my family and that is the part that mobilizes you the most. With Vero, who is the best companion of the galaxy, we have been hugging each other for a week and saying: ‘I’m going to miss you, I’m going to miss you, I’m going to miss you.’

Loose ends
Although, at the moment, no details are known about the argument of the second installment, this first one has left several open plots. Let us remember that Sky Rojo has said goodbye to the protagonists, fed up with being hares, ready to steal Romeo’s safe at Club Las Novias and thus recover what is his.

In Plot of Bears, the final chapter, Coral is in charge of going to the premises to try to deceive and rob Romeo, who has a crazy obsession with her, but does not know that Moisés (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) has confessed to the pimp that he has had an affair with her.

For this reason, when entering his office, he meets a Romeo who does not believe in his repentance and loses his temper after reproaching him that he has slept with his “soul brother”. Both star in a sword fight that ends with Coral throwing hers at Romeo. Seconds later, he tries to revive the pimp, who has overdosed.

Meanwhile, Moisés, who has to prove his loyalty to Romeo, has tracked down Coral’s mobile SIM card, the one they are using to set him up. Before, he has left his brother Christian (Enric Auquer) lying on the road, thus wanting to separate him from that world.

At a gas station not far from there, while Wendy and Gina wait for Moisés to arrive, the Argentine confesses to her friend that an ex-customer has made love to her in the bathroom of the restaurant where they had dined.

In a few minutes, Moisés arrives at the gas station and the young women drive him on a motorcycle to the plot they have prepared for him: a hole in the middle of a construction site. Soon the bully is (literally) ambushed and trapped in the hole with his car. Once there, Wendy shoves dirt on him with a bulldozer. However, Moses manages to shoot her in the side.

At the club, Coral continues to revive Romeo. It doesn’t take long for him to open his eyes and grab the protagonist by the neck. “The game had only just begun,” Coral warns in a voiceover.

Future plots
Seeing how frantic the first installment has been, we can expect that same unbridled pace in the second. Another eight half-hour episodes in which the protagonists will have to face Romeo and his henchmen again. For now, the most urgent thing is to heal Wendy’s gunshot wound (will they go back to Luis Zahera’s vet?) And save Coral from Romeo.

Moses must also manage to get out of the hole in which they have buried him, while Christian runs in search of him. But beyond these pressing questions, the series could also continue delving into the protagonists’ past, especially Coral’s, now that we know that she was an abused woman who accidentally killed her mother-in-law, and is also pursued by her husband.

Her relationship with Moisés is another of the subplots that fiction could continue to develop in the new episodes, since Romeo’s bully seems to feel something more than attraction to the prostitute. Will he be able to betray the pimp for her? And let’s not forget, that with so much fuss it is easy, that Gina is pregnant.

Cast and release date
At the moment, it has not transpired whether there will be new signings in the new episodes, although we can count on the return of the three protagonists (Verónica Sánchez, Lali Espósito and Yany Prado) and their worst nightmares (Asier Etxeandia, Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Enric Auquer) .

As we have already anticipated, the filming of the second season ended a month ago, so now we would be working on its post-production. Although at the moment it is not known when it will be released, it is likely that, at the earliest, it will arrive at the end of this year or the beginning of next year, especially if we take into account that in 2021 Netflix still has pending the launches of the new Elite or the end of La casa de papel (something that will also keep Pina busy), among other Spanish series.
