The researchers fasted overnight, then randomly assigned them to eat an almond or a carbohydrate snack of the same calorie content. Then, they gave the subjects a buffet, checking their appetite and calories regularly during their meal quantity.

The study found that those in the almond group ate about 300 fewer calories than the carbohydrate snack. Because almonds are rich in protein, fiber, and unsaturated fatty acids, they can feel whole, promote the body’s energy balance, and reduce food intake.
